Example Rides

The list of rides that follow are examples to give an idea of where we ride and the levels that we ride at (length of ride, climbing and technical features). The actual ride programme is shown on the booking system, Spond. There are rides on most weekdays (we don’t usually ride at weekends).

Worplesdon (Level  1) 14m (1+ after heavy rain)- Using tracks over Whitmoor Common, along to Pirbright, then up and around Henley Park Ranges and back via Merrist Wood.

Devil’s Punchbowl (Level 3+)
This ride explores the steep and rocky bridleways of the Devil’s Punchbowl, with perhaps a loop around the heathlands of Ockley Common and Hankley Common. A fast ride with plenty of climbing, for experienced and fit riders only. Mostly sandy trails but mud is always possible.

Princes Coverts and The Commons (Level 2+) 18m Ride across Arbrook, Oxshott and Esher Commons with a couple of short challenging climbs, possible coffee stop at Claremont Lakes.

Blackwater North (from Bagshot) (level 2) 19m
The River Blackwater is first encountered at Frimley Hatches, though you might not notice it. We get there via Lightwater Country Park and the Frith Hill managed access area. At last! Our route will follow the River Blackwater between Frimley and Sandhurst. Leaving the river, we cycle through Wildmoor Heath to reach Swinley Forest where we may or may not enjoy several single-track trails. We eventually ride across Bagshot Heath to get back to our start point at The Forester’s Arms.

Nutfield (Level 2) 16m, mainly bridleways with coffee stop midway. Nothing very technical, but risk of mud. We ascend the North Downs mainly on tarmac or hardpack.

Chaldon (Level 3) 20m. New Ride. Quite long with a couple of tough climbs. To Alderstead Heath, Netherne on the Hill, Farthing Down, Kenley Airfield, Warlingham for coffee etc., Gravelly Hill and back.

Cobham (Level 2) 13m. Predominantly on bridleways and permissive horse rides including some hills with steep but short sections and some rooty trails and single track with a banana break half way round.

Holmbury, Pitch and Winterfold (Level 3+)
This ride will roam across the Surrey Hills, looking for the trails which are running best in whatever conditions we find on the day. Technical features will include steep and rough descents, drop-offs and small jumps. A fast ride with plenty of climbing, for experienced and fit riders who are comfortable tackling unexpected trail features only.

Bookham (Level 1) 14m .Maximum 14 cyclists + leader. After a long gentle climb towards Polesden Lacey we head downhill to Bocketts Farm, on to Leatherhead Leisure Centre and then to Fetcham Splash on the River Mole for a banana break. We return to Bookham using familiar tracks across Bookham and Effingham Commons.

Bushy Park (Level 1) 16m An easy 16 mile ride along the towpath at Hampton Court Palace to Kingston, Ham and Richmond Park returning via Teddington. Coffee stop at Pen Ponds Richmond Park.

Forest Green (Level 2+) 19m New ride: Starting at The Parrot in Forest Green the route climbs Leith Hill via a wide but steep (in places) bridleway. Past the tower down either the first stage of Summer Lightning or a tricky and rooty descent to the entrance to Duke’s Warren (rider personal choice). Over to NC22 across Abinger Roughs, coffee in Gomshall and return via Peaslake. 19 miles and 1900ft of climbing.

Redlands and Leith Hill (Level 3+)
This is Julian’s most technical ride, so experienced riders only please! We will explore the singletrack around Abinger Common, and then head to Redlands woods where the trails are steep and seriously challenging. Technical features will include steep and rough descents, drop-offs and small jumps. A fast ride with plenty of climbing, for experienced and fit riders who are comfortable tackling unexpected trail features only.

Peaslake (Level 3+)
This ride will roam across the Surrey Hills, looking for the trails which are running best in whatever conditions we find on the day. Technical features will include steep and rough descents, drop-offs and small jumps. A fast ride with plenty of climbing, for experienced and fit riders who are comfortable tackling unexpected trail features only.

Tattenham Corner (Level 1+)  14m, nearly all on bridleways to Reigate Hill for view/loo/brew. No big hills, but a few slopes, inclines and chance of mud.

Wood Street (Level 1+) 14m: Flat ride along the Christmas Pie trail towards Ash then some hills to Ash Ranges. Return via Normandy. One steep descent hence the 1+.

Denbies, Mickleham and Ranmore (Level 3+)
Explore the trails of Box Hill, Mickleham and Ranmore. The North Downs feature lots of hidden singletrack, which can be muddy and slippery if the weather has been wet! A fast ride with plenty of climbing, for experienced and fit riders only.

Mogador (Level 2) 15m  To Ashtead and back. Some moderate climbing.

Brookwood and Bisley Ranges (Level 1+) 15m
Note that this ride now starts from West End. This time we shall perform the ride in the clockwise direction.  The ride includes a visit to the military and civilian cemeteries at Brookwood, as well as the railway station.  Bisley National Shooting range, with its unusual buildings and noise, is also on the itinerary. When we get back to West End we shall drop into the Hare & Hounds for post-exertion sustenance, but if this does not suit it’s just a quarter of a mile further to get back to the start point.

Ripley Green (Level 1) 14miles Maximum 9 cyclists + leader. An easy slow pace ride to Brooklands race track via Wisley Common and Byfleet. Returning along the Wey navigation canal passing Pyrford Lock and Walsham Weir. A good beginners ride as there are no significant climbs.

Earlswood Lakes: (Level 1+) 19m: Long ride, initially on N21 towards Horley & back via Smallfield & Outwood. Mostly level tracks with some road cycling. One longish climb up to Outwood.

Friday Street (Level 3+)

A fast ride with plenty of climbing, for experienced and fit riders who are comfortable tackling unexpected trail features only

Ashtead to Reigate Hill (Level 2+) 18m Fast paced (if not too muddy) ride via Headley with spectacular views from Colley Hill, stopping for refreshments at Reigate Hill then back via Walton Heath and Epsom Downs

Norbury Park (Level 2+) 16-18m Ride the trails around Norbury Park, Bocketts Farm and Ranmore, a few rooty bits, climbing legs needed! Refreshment stop at either Bocketts or Polesden Lacey.

Newdigate (Level 1) 15m. Maximum 14 cyclists + leader. Quiet Lanes and firm surfaced tracks with a few short climbs but nothing too challenging. The route includes the circular trail on Holmwood Common. Possibly some large puddles to negotiate after heavy rain.

Leigh: (Level 1) 14m Easy ride around the area south of Leigh, on tracks and some road. Stopping for coffee at Tanhouse Farm

Outwood (Level 2) 16m.  (max 12 riders). Through field and woodland tracks to Bletchingley and on to Godstone for tea/cake stop.  Return via the Greensand Way and bridleways.  Nice views, chance of mud, some single track and ups and downs, nothing too technical.
